International Smoke Alarm Legislation & Technology for Residential Structures

FPA Australia is pleased to welcome four students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, USA to our office. Tim, John, Kemal and Brian commenced their time at FPA Australia in March, and will be here until May. The students are working to compile a database of worldwide smoke alarm legislation. When complete, the database will be available for access by Australian and International Fire Associations, including FPA Australia, Australian Fire Authorities and Emergency Services Council and the National Fire Protection association (USA). Surveys have been sent to fire protection professionals around the world and the students have had a high rate of response. They are currently in the process of collating these responses, which will provide legislation information for the database.
The students are also examining issues in relation to smoke alarm technology, including the debate between photoelectric vs. ionisation alarms and an evaluation of
research into varying alarm tones. The project forms part of a degree requirement
for the students, who will give a final presentation before returning to the USA to
continue their studies. We would like to thank any members who have assisted the students during their time with FPA Australia.
