Master Builders Commits to Jobs Under Energy Efficient Homes Program

Master Builders Australia, last Thursday made a commitment to working with the Australian Government in efforts to encourage builders and subcontractors to engage and train jobseekers despite the difficult economic period ahead.
Master Builders Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian Government and the National Employment Services Association to promote employment and training in the building industry under the Government’s Energy Efficient Homes Program. This $3.9 billion program offers homeowners and landlords rebates for installing home ceiling insulation for up to 2.9 million houses and is part of the Government’s $42 billion Nation Building and Jobs Plan.
The MOU was signed in the presence of Senator the Hon Mark Arbib, Minister for Employment Participation and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Government Service Delivery and the Hon Peter Garrett AM MP, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts.
Mr Wilhelm Harnisch, CEO of Master Builders, said, “Master Builders has for over 125 years demonstrated a strong commitment to encouraging, mentoring and training young people to enter the building and construction industry, and this MOU is further demonstration of that commitment.”
He said, “Master Builders accepts that it has a responsibility to assist job seekers in this difficult period ahead and to make every effort to ensure that the industry has an adequate skilled labour force once the recovery in building and construction returns.
“Master Builders has strongly welcomed the Government’s Nation Building and Jobs Plan, including the Energy Efficient Homes Program, in underpinning economic growth and jobs in order to stem the impacts of the economic downturn.
The Government’s stimulus package, particularly the Energy Efficient Homes Program, provides valuable employment opportunities that Master Builders will promote to its members and the building industry.”
Mr Harnisch said, “Master Builders will work with Job Services Australia, which was launched this week, and to promote its services to builders and subcontractors to help job seekers, particularly those displaced by the economic downtown, to return to employment with enhanced skills as soon as possible. This particularly applies to out of trade apprentices.”
