Master Builders Australia last Thursday warned of serious consequences if the Senate votes to water down the current powers of the Australian Building and Construction Commission.
Mr Wilhelm Harnisch, CEO of Master Builders Australia said: ‘The Senate majority report looking at the Bill to replace the ABCC has failed to recognise the warning of Justice Wilcox to the Government that there is “more work to be done” in changing the culture of unlawfulness in the building and construction industry and that it would be “unfortunate if the inclusion of the ABCC in the Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman led to a reversal of the progress that has been made’.”
Master Builders is very disappointed that the Senate majority report recommends that the Building and Construction Industry Improvement Amendment (Transition to Fair Work) Bill 2009 proceed, with a few minor amendments.
Mr Harnisch said, “The Bill requires more that just a few amendments if the replacement inspectorate is to remain a tough cop on the beat.
“The recommendation for a toothless tiger is disappointing particularly in light of very recent unacceptable behaviour at the Westgate Bridge and at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.
“This should not and must not be a feature of the industry’s operations. Unfortunately this is the sort of behaviour returning to the industry in the face of a tough watchdog and things can only get worse without one.
“The community and governments have the right to expect that these sorts of behaviours are unacceptable in Australia’s contemporary economic and industrial landscape.
“Thuggery and violence can never and must never be acceptable."
“Master Builders has written to the Government asking it to withdraw the replacement Bill and to retain the industry specific laws,” Mr Harnisch said
“Master Builders has also called on the Opposition and cross bench Senators to oppose the Bill.
